“God of my fathers. Quick beneath

the rust. Vengeance is yours and yours

too is the judgment and the spoils.”

There was a time we called You thus

at the desert’s edge. It’s still the same

desert we are the same it serves

what good to go back? The way is long.

Are you the One who whispers diphthongs,

an affricate, and moves creation?

“If you are He who created us

from all and nothing, at the surface,

—as water lilies from silt and air,

then why, O Lord, did you set the sun

amid your glory to shine down

the same love on just—and unjust?

Oh could you now, as long ago,

strew the innards of Gog and Magog,

and with your outstretched hand dash

their tender newborns on the rocks.”
